I lived in Swansboro at the time. My husband and I chose to ride out the storm. We were about 7miles southwest from Emerald Isle and the way the storm was moving we were in the right front quadrant of the storm. We were with in the 50-60 mile wide wall, not even close to the center of the eye but yet very close. Part of the eye wall, from what I understand, went over North Topsail Beach which is in the county I lived in- Onslow County. I can remember hearing the wind as it was non stop roar and I could hear the gust rolling in overtop of the already raging winds. I could here it rolling in from a mile away. when the gust hit my house it hit with such a force that my bed in the upstairs room shook and I would count up to 6 seconds before the gust would roll away leaving only the constant roar behind. She was a very loud storm. She may have been small compared to many hurricanes but she was devastating. Swansboro was equally hard hit as Wilminton and since we are a small town pound for pound it was devastating. We got 33-34 inches of rain in less then 24 hours. I went downstairs during the height of the storm and I was tempted to open the front door but didn't because the force of the wind hitting my door was unbelievable. the storm was so intense that you could feel the energy of the storm without even touching the door.

Yep that's what it's like. I have been through a few in my 50 yrs here in Wilmington. This one bothered us the most because it stuck around. We also are positive the gusts got higher than they reported. Every house in our neighborhood either had a tree on their roof or had parts of the roof blown off. The aftermath of this one was worse than other. Being cut off by flooding from all sides was a learning experience for sure. But we got out better than Florida's coast with Micheal. We are having to face the fact that these storms are getting stronger

I just came across this video and I'm glad I did. I live less than 3 miles away from where all the footage was shot and my office is right down the street. It's a great visualization of what I felt like must've been going on outside. I rode the storm out in a house with a few friends and remember listening to the windows flexing and praying that they wouldn't shatter or that one of the hundreds of massive trees that were coming down didn't come through our roof. I've lived in Wilmington for 20 years and been through a few Cat 1 and Cat 2 storms and I can tell you this one definitely didn't feel like a Cat 1. The winds were bad enough but even worse was that the storm stayed on top of us for almost 3 full days and dumped close to 3 feet of rain. Much like what happened with Hurricane Floyd in 1999, we ended up being cut off from the rest of the world for almost 2 weeks because all of the roads in and out of town were under water. It was almost impossible to get food, ice, gas, just about anything and people were definitely getting desperate. I hope we never have another one like that. Thanks for the vid!

I love how even with that crazy wind they still had streetlights. Here in western Washington however, 20 minutes of 50 mph wind will leave us without power for days. Gotta love the infinite wisdom of running power lines right through the firs and pines.

To be honest, after watching the footage, a low-end cat 2 landfall seems more reasonable. Comparing it to the 85 and 75mph landfall of Nate last year, this is definitely a league above that

Not bad but I think tornado are far more terrifying and clearly the winds in a Tornado are far more violent even tho a Hurricane is much larger in size but the winds of a tornado are far more intense from what I've seen.

+NaturallyKoily Kuteness okay first off yeah hurricane Florence is an average hurricane, everything you stated with the floods and deaths, that happens in an average hurricanes. People die from them, it's sad but it's life. Secondly your right can't always fully prepare, but boarding windows, stocking food, getting sandbag's, having something to inflate to float on, stay away from windows, draining your pool etc. can really help with a lot of the damage. Ive undergone the tornado of Alabama Enterprise that killed some highschoolers and almost hit my elementary school. I think I know what im talking about. Maybe here in Florida we are more used too and ready for hurricanes than the Carolinas since you guys don't get them as much.
NaturallyKoily Kuteness
NaturallyKoily Kuteness - Vor 6 Monate
Listen, having lived through hurricanes and tornadoes all of my life, you can prepare for absolutely everything and you're still not prepared. If you were living here, you would understand there's only so much that you can do but you're never prepared for the flood waters. You're never prepared for sinkholes. You're never prepared for the aftermath. You just do the best you can to stay safe, prepare as much as you can throughout the year, and stay safe. I'm in Lumberton NC...live on higher ground and we were still worried about flooding, impassable roads and such. You just learn to muddle through the best that you can. A lot of people are still homeless from Hurricane Matthew 2016...they thought they were prepared as well but no one really knows how those storms turn out until they've passed and even then its still bad news afterwards. Many people died running from the storm, many stayed and lived through it, and some were washed away in still waters that were rising while traveling...as I've stated earlier, you can never be completely prepared. Anything can happen. Hurricane Florence wasn't just an average hurricane...it still did a lot of damage. Matthew came and move on quickly while Florence lingered over us for 3 to 4 days. That's constant wind and rain coming down for 72 or more hours. Trust me it wasn't average at all. Luckily there were pumps in place to relieve some flooding and the rivers were constantly running over in the streets and homes. The good thing that didn't happen is the fact that the levees were holding this time. That saved us some trouble and helped with recovery process. During Matthew we went 16 days without any sign of power....the entire city. This time some areas had power.
